New Technology
Nuclear, Wind, Solar, biofuel, and clean coal are all new things to use in order to create energy in places of things like electricity and oil. Some may even be more effective, but changing a countries main use for energy can take years and would cause a slump in the economy.
The pros to using these different things to supply energy are that there are a variety to choose from and all of them work , there would be another resource we could use after all oil has been depleted, and the cost for energy could be reduced.

What is being done and how effective is it?
There is research being conducted for even more methods, mostly looking for more renewable sources of energy so we won't run out. In addition the search for the current resources we know we can use is still going on to make sure we can use as much as we need for a long period of time.
